About Corepoint

Corepoint - promoting integrated coastal management through awareness raising and policy driven research.

Despite the EU Recommendation on Integrated Coastal Zone Management there is a general lack of understanding of the true meaning of ICZM, the benefits of its application and the important role that science has in promoting this process.

Often research is conducted in isolation and the results conveyed in a way that is difficult for non-scientists to understand. Therefore, in addition to promotion, the scientific community have an obligation to ensure the usefulness of their research.

The Corepoint project aims to address these issues by:

• Running a series of awareness-raising and capacity-building events across North West Europe including workshops, conferences and innovative case study based training for stakeholders involved in Coastal Management.
• Linking local authorities with research centres to form Expert Couplet Nodes so that any research undertaken will be in response to requests from the local authorities.
• Conducting an assessment on the current level of understanding of ICZM, quantifying the different approaches and interpretations adopted at national levels with respect to the tenets of the Recommendation.
• Testing ICZM at a local level to inform spatial policy across North West Europe at regional and national levels.
• Ensuring that all Project output is accessible, in terms of content and language but also availability through newsletters, the Project website and innovative mechanisms such as this web-based portal.
